The report, published on the 28th February 2017, took into account all forms of gambling, including casino gaming, gambling with bookmakers and participation in various lotteries, and was part of the UKGC’s continuing efforts to review, refine and regulate the country's betting industry. The findings also revealed a sizeable upswing in the number of people placing bets via their smartphones and tablets. This coincided with the total revenue of the mobile gaming industry reaching a staggering $36.9 billion, according to market intelligence experts Newzoo.
It was also revealed that online gamblers are now even more likely to have an average of three separate betting accounts, which suggests that punters are keen to take advantage of promotions and better odds, rather than relying on a single brand. “Our research puts us in a powerful position to better understand the needs of gambling consumers,” UKGC’s programme director James Green explained in a press release.
Surprisingly, the report found a sharp rise in the number of women gambling in the UK, with 44 percent of the female population enjoying a wager in the last 12 months. It is also worth noting that 67 percent of the people surveyed believed individuals should have the right to gamble whenever they like, however, 78 percent still thought that there were too many gambling opportunities available to UK residents. With this data, the UKGC now aims to improve the country’s gambling economy in the coming years.
