The Microgaming Poker Network has named Simon Jones as the Greatest Poker Player in the Universe – an accolade which was bestowed upon the sports psychology lecturer and professional poker player after he won the 2017 Universal Championship of Poker. This was the third UCOP since the annual series was launched in 2015, and it was the biggest to date, with a total of €810,000 being offered in prize pools.

2017 Universal Championship of Poker

When the 2017 UCOP was first announced, the total prize pool guarantee was €750,000, which was already €250,000 more than was offered in 2016. However, the championship attracted even more players than anticipated, so the guaranteed figure – which covered 59 events – was similarly oversized.

The Greatest Poker Player in the Universe title went to Simon Jones because he managed to top a €10,000 leaderboard which was running for the duration of the championship series. As well as winning his fair share of cash in individual tournaments, Simon’s domination of the leaderboard earned him a trophy and a cash bonus worth €5,000. He also has one of the most impressive titles in the poker world – sorry, universe – and he is naturally delighted with his achievement.

‘I hadn't actually planned on playing the whole UCOP series but I'd been doing really well on the MPN the previous couple of months,’ Simon said. ‘Plus, the size of the fields in the network tournaments mean you have a realistic chance of getting close to the money a decent chunk of the time, so I decided to see how the first few days went before committing myself. I had a couple of third place finishes and other deep runs to put me in the top five. Then a €5.4K win in Event #32 catapulted me to the top spot. I really wanted that trophy and I’m chuffed to actually win.’

Alex Scott, who is Head of Product (Network Games) at Microgaming, was understandably delighted with the success of this year’s UCOP. ‘The poker industry’s most thrilling tournament series comes to a close once more, with another huge increase in prize pools compared to the previous year,’ he said. ‘Congratulations to Simon on becoming the Greatest Poker Player in the Universe… for now!’
