Microgaming has announced that it has secured a licensing agreement to create an official online slot game based on the 1986 movie Highlander. This will come as very good news to the legion of fans, not only of the original cult film, but of the many various sequels and offshoots that have appeared in the three decades since its release. Work on the title is already well underway, and the game will arrive at Microgaming casinos on Wednesday 6 December.

Highlander the Film

For those who have been living in a parallel universe for the last thirty years – which is the only scenario in which we can imagine a person not having at least a passing familiarity with the franchise – Highlander told the story of an ongoing battle between immortal warriors. The Highlander himself was played by Christopher Lambert, Clancy Brown played his nemesis, The Kurgan, and Sean Connery played an Egyptian immortal who served as The Highlander’s mentor.

Whilst the movie didn’t make as much money at the box office as it cost to make ($12.9 million versus $19 million) it did go on to develop a massive cult following, and spawned no fewer than five sequels, numerous novels, and multiple television series. Against that backdrop, it is not at all surprising that the Highlander universe should find its way into the online casino world. Indeed, the only real surprise is that it has taken this long to happen.

Highlander Online Slot

The Highlander online slot will have a 243 Ways to Win format and will focus on the characters and plot of the original movie, which was set in New York City in the 1980s and the Scottish Highlands in the 1500s. No further details about the game itself have been made public, but given the superb quality of Microgaming’s previous cinematic titles, we are confident that players can look forward to something very special indeed.

‘Highlander is seen as one of the great cult hits of the 80s,’ said David Reynolds, who is Games Publisher at Microgaming. ‘With its action-packed storyline and hefty rock-inspired composition, it is a fantastic brand for an online slot. The game studio is busy completing the slot that captures all of the movie magic. The game’s features will incorporate the historical Scottish Highlands and gritty New York City, with a classic movie poster art style and blistering guitar tracks.’

Stephanie Kupperman, speaking on behalf of Creative Licensing, which brokered the deal with Studiocanal, said: ‘Many of the iconic characters from classic Highlander are featured in the slot...We think fans are really going to enjoy revisiting this epic story, and seeing their favourite heroes and villains in game format.’

We look forward to reviewing the Highlander game when it is released in December. In the meantime, other Microgaming 243 Ways to Win titles, including Jurassic World and Game of Thrones, can be played at 32Red Casino and other venues on the Microgaming platform.
