Whilst the closure of the Grosvenor Casino on Merrion Way is disappointing, the fact that there is already a second Grosvenor Casino in the city, and that another major casino is just months away from opening its doors to the public, is a huge consolation. Players who frequent Grosvenor Casino Westgate will be particularly encouraged to hear that the company intends to refurbish the site over the next few months in order to ‘provide an even more exciting experience for the people of Leeds.’
Looking ahead, the new ‘large casino’ at Victoria Gate will be situated above retail stores in the new development, and provide employment for over 200 people. Leeds City Council awarded the license for the casino to Global Gambling Ventures Ltd in 2013, preferring it to four other applications, including one made by Leeds United Football Club. According to licensing regulations, a ‘large casino’ is one which has a minimum area of 1,000 square metres and up to 150 slot machines. The maximum jackpot that can be offered by those machines is £4,000.
The new Victoria Gate development will occupy around 42,000 square metres, and has been designed to offer a variety of retail and leisure pursuits in a ‘21st century elegant retail arcade’ environment. The fact that the casino at Victoria Gate will be situated above the retail outlets means that it will be right in the heart of the centre and offer maximum convenience to visitors who want to enjoy shopping, dining and gaming, all under one roof.
