Opera House Casino, Scarborough imac

The Opera House Casino is situated close to the town centre in Scarborough on Thomas Street, within easy walking distance of the harbour and sea-front.  The casino is based, funnily enough, in an old Opera House (a Grade II listed building which hosted performances until summer 1995) which was purchased by the current owner, Nikolas Shaw in 2002. After a £7 million refurbishment the casino opened for business in 2005.

A lot of businesses in Scarborough are targeted at the lower-end of the market with Poundland, Poundshop, Aldi, Lidl and shove-ha’penny featuring heavily. And it is with this background that we found The Opera House Casino to be unexpectedly smart.

Perhaps due to its recent refurbishment, the property feels “well looked-after” and sports a circular theme wherever you go; the main room is circular, the design on the carpets is circular and fixtures & fittings feature circles. You can play American Roulette, Touch-Bet Roulette, Blackjack, Three-Card Card Poker and Jackpot Machines (up to £4,000). There is also a large Texas Hold’em Poker with space for up to 55 players. The dealers are courteous and helpful and seemed reasonably efficient.

You will find three bars open from 10am until ‘late’ seven days a week. Food is available in the casino lounge area, also sporting the circular theme. Snacks are served from 10am with full service from 6pm until 2am. The range of food is what you might expect, nothing spectacular, but it isn’t exactly top quality.

Overall, however, we would definitely recommend that you give this casino a go, especially as there are no membership requirements so you can walk right in and see what you think for yourself (smart casual dress is required, so don’t bowl up in your beachwear!)

Atmosphere and amenities

Atmosphere

The roof is fairly low, but not excessively so, so the atmosphere is that of a busy lounge rather than a crowded gaming area.  Perhaps the efficiency of the croupiers helped, but we’d call the overall feeling ‘relaxed’

Restaurants

There’s only one restaurant and as we’ve highlighted in the summary, the food is average at best. Indeed, the dining was the most disappointing aspect of the whole Opera House Casino experience – don’t take your partner for a nice meal out at this casino! Typical choices include Sirloin Steak, Whitby Scampi and Chilli con Carne. Prices are good though.

Bars

Three bars; all with a good range of drinks and all at reasonable prices. The Stalls Bar has large screen TVs showing sports. If you want champagne, head for the Upper Circle Bar, where you can look down on most of the action – note: this area is also available to book for private functions.

Toilets

Another bit of a let-down. There isn’t an over-endowment of facilities and when we paid a visit they had a distinctly uninviting aroma. Whilst obviously cleaned, it seems to have been done in a slap-dash manner. The décor is also starting to fray around the edges.

Staff

We only had a limited time to play at the tables in the Opera House and during that time we didn’t see any problems which is when the staff has their chance to shine. So our observation would be that they know their job and do it in a friendly and efficient manner.
