Paddy Power Pays Out on La La Land and Moonlight After Oscars Mix-Up

Paddy Power punters who backed La La Land to win the Oscar for best picture have been left thankful to a wrong announcement by Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, after they were paid out despite the movie missing out on the top award.

In a moment that has already gone down as the biggest gaffe in the history of the Academy Awards, musical comedy-drama La La Land was named as the best picture by presenters Beatty and Dunaway and the team behind the film came on stage to accept the award. It was only while the speeches were being made that it became apparent that there had been a mix-up and the correct envelope was shown to reveal that Moonlight was in fact the best picture.

La La Land had been the hot favourite to dominate the 2017 Oscars, and there was relief for customers who had backed the film when Paddy Power quickly tweeted to say that they would receive their winnings. The Paddy Power blog read: “Don’t worry folks, as Donald Trump’s election win proves, everyone makes mistakes.

“But fear not, punters, because just like in a Hollywood movie where the good-looking hero character saves the day, Paddy Power is here. Alright his BMI is slightly high and he’s not exactly Channing Tatum, but he is paying out on both La La Land and Moonlight as winners – which is excellent news for punters who were on La La Land at super-skinny odds of 1/6.”

Paddy Power has a host of other novelty betting markets, including odds on popular Hollywood topics such as the identity of the next James Bond. You can check out a review of the Paddy Power sportsbook, as its punters continue to revel in the aftermath of the Oscars mix-up!
