Capaldi announced on Monday that he would be leaving the hit BBC sci-fi series at the end of the year as he felt it was time to move on. He succeeded Matt Smith in December 2013, following a long line of actors such as David Tennant, Christopher Eccleston, Sylvester McCoy and Colin Baker to have played the iconic role.
The Doctor’s next regeneration could be one of his most eye-catching yet, with Ladbrokes rating Broadchurch star Colman as the most likely to step into the TARDIS at odds of 5/1. The League of Gentlemen star Reece Shearsmith is another contender at 8/1, followed by Bonham Carter at 10/1.
Ben Wishaw, Richard Ayoade, Idris Elba and Rory Kinnear are also among those tipped to take on the part, in a market which is likely to fluctuate sharply in the coming weeks and months.
William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams said: "Everyone seems to have an opinion and we have added almost 20 new names in the first 12 hours of betting. There is also a small move to suggest that we might just get the first female Doctor."
The new series will air in the spring and viewers will have to wait until Christmas for Capaldi’s final episode, before discovering who will be the next Doctor.
