With the odds on a white Christmas now rising rapidly, a number of seasonal punters have opted to put their money on Santa working up a sweat in what has been a particularly mild winter so far. “At this time of year we are used to punters placing their bets on a white Christmas, but this year it is the complete opposite as bets pour in on the hottest one ever,” Coral’s Nicola McGready explained to the Telegraph. This news comes just weeks after experts were predicting 2016 would end with a cold snap, leaving many bettors in two minds over which outcome they should back.
Coral is currently offering odds of 16/1 on December’s record high temperature of 18.3℃ being broken before the month is out. The record temperature on Christmas Day is slightly lower, with 2015 setting the benchmark. This saw Devon notch up a balmy 16℃, leaving the county feeling more like La Paz than Lapland. However, with southwesterly winds set to drag warm air across the UK, Ladbrokes have been forced to slash their odds of a heated holiday season from 16/1 to a very tempting 8/1.
