Bookmakers Make Their 2017 Oscars Predictions

Nominations for the 89th Academy Awards, which are of course more often referred to as The Oscars, will be announced on Tuesday 24 January. The nominations are usually announced live at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California, but this year – and for the very first time – they will be streamed live online, taking the film industry’s most famous awards into the digital age. Bookmakers are already offering odds about this year’s Oscar winners, so let’s take a look at who they are predicting to win.

William Hill have La La Land priced as the 2/9 favourite to win Best Picture, which isn’t surprising given that the musical scooped seven trophies at the Golden Globe Awards earlier this month. Moonlight is the 9/2 second favourite and Manchester by the Sea is third favourite at 9/2, with other movies offered at 20/1 or bigger.

Casey Affleck is the 1/4 favourite at Ladbrokes to take the Best Actor award for his role in Manchester by the Sea, with Denzil Washington the 3/1 second favourite for his role in Fences. La La Land’s Ryan Gosling is the 7/1 third favourite and others are 25/1 or bigger.

Emma Stone attracted critical acclaim for her role in La La Land, and it has made her Paddy Power’s 10/11 favourite to win the Oscar for Best Actress. Natalie Portman is 11/8 second favourite for her role in Jackie, and Isabelle Huppert is 4/1 for Elle. Other contenders in this market are currently priced at 13/1 or bigger.

Damien Chazeller is priced at 1/5 by SkyBet to win Best Director for La La Land, and Kenneth Lonergan is the 7/1 second favourite for Manchester by the Sea. Moonlight’s director, Barry Jenkins, is next best at 8/1, and bettors can take 28/1 or bigger about the rest.

Markets are also available for several other Academy Awards categories, but the ones highlighted here are the ones attracting most interest as we approach the nominations announcement on Tuesday 24 January. It is very likely that the odds about those at the front of the betting will contract even further if and when their nominations are confirmed and the field of possible opponents is reduced, so visit William Hill and the other bookmakers mentioned if you would like to strike a bet before then, and good luck with your selections.
