The Rank Group, which also owns the Grosvenor Casino brand, is looking to offer bingo fans a new type of experience. Rather than the large, out-of-town venues which are a hallmark of most Mecca clubs, the new sites will cater more for players who want ‘convenience gaming’, and would likely be located in smaller buildings based on high streets, which would appeal to a younger audience.
“Mecca in the retail world is slightly a product of the 1960s, 70s and 80s in terms of where they’re located and what the clubs look like,” Rank Group CEO Henry Birch said in a recent interview with the Daily Telegraph. “Much like Sainsbury’s and Tesco created Sainsbury’s Local and Tesco Metro we’ve actually observed that people increasingly want to go out more in city centres.”
The plans are to open two or three of the new clubs in the first few months of 2017 and judge the response from players before launching more venues later in the year. Luma and Kuda had also been put forward as possible names for the new brand, but reports suggest that Rank has opted to go with Luda in a move which it is hoped will re-energise the bingo industry.
