Video poker jackpots are the things that all online video poker players dream of winning. Most games pay out jackpots for the best hand in poker, which is the Royal Flush, but others offer jackpots for non-traditional hands. Whatever the case, if you want to pursue video poker jackpots there are a number of things that are worth bearing in mind...

1 – Jackpots Differ
First of all, it is worth noting that not all jackpots work in the same way. Some jackpots are fixed, and pay out the same number of credits regardless of when they are won. Others are progressive, which means that the size of the jackpot keeps growing until someone eventually gets lucky. This means that some games can offer better value than others, and you may be able to get more value for money by playing a juicy progressive game than you will playing a regular game. Check the odds of making the top hand and compare this with the current jackpot to see if this is the case.

2 – Many Jackpots Require Max Stakes
The next thing you ought to bear in mind is that many video poker jackpots will only pay out in full if you are playing the maximum number of credits on the hand. For example, if you are playing a game that allows you to bet 1 to 5 credits per hand, you will often need to bet 5 credits to receive the full jackpot payout. Betting less than this amount and hitting the best hand will still get you a decent win, but probably not the sum that is advertised as the jackpot size.

3 – Jackpots Are Random
Although video poker is a game that gives us a chance to decide the best way to play the cards we are dealt, those cards are actually dealt at random. There is therefore nothing that we can do to improve our chances of winning a jackpot apart from playing our hands to the best of our ability and hoping for the best. For example, if you are dealt four to a Royal Flush it makes sense to hold those four and hope to draw the fifth card that will win us the jackpot, but whether or not that happens is ultimately down to luck. Understanding this will help to keep your stress levels down when you come close but miss the cigar.

4 – Jackpots Aren’t Everything
All online video poker players would like to win a jackpot, but video poker jackpots aren’t everything. Our main concern should be to maximise our chances of having a profitable session by playing sensibly and having fun at the same time. If we happen to land a jackpot along the way, that’s great, but if we don’t then at least we will have enjoyed the session regardless.
