Those who are new to racing are often surprised that horses
themselves are referred to in different ways - as fillies,
or maidens, for example. These terms actually mean something,
so to help you get up to speed, here's a quick definition
of the ones that you are most likely to come across:
- Filly
- a female horse under four years of age.
- Gelding
- a horse that has been castrated.
- Juvenile
- a two year old.
- Maiden
- a horse that has not yet won a race.
- Mare
- a female horse aged five or older.
