Assessing Jockeys

Assessing Jockeys
.
A jockey's relative ability becomes manifest in direct ratio to the distance of a race. That is to say, that one's ability, or lack of it, assumes greater importance as the distance increases. Most apprentices have the capability to break a horse fast, which is the prime requisite in sprint races. In consequence the majority of their wins are usually acquired under such circumstances. In route races they usually do not fare as well, not necessarily because they are lacking in basic ability but because they are lacking in the experience needed for properly gauging a race. An experienced booter will not only be able to correctly gauge the pace of a race, he can enable a front-running sprinter to go a route.
