To win at roulette you first need to understand something about the game and the main types of bets that can be placed. The game itself comes in several forms, but all varieties follow the same core rules.
The aim of roulette is for players to predict where a small ball will land when the roulette wheel – which has wells numbers 1 to 36 and either one or two zeros labelled 0 and 00 – stops spinning. The numbers 1 to 36 are coloured red or black (18 of each colour) and the 0 and 00 are green.
Bets can be placed on a variety of outcomes. The most popular ones, and the payouts generally associated with them, are as follows:
Odd / Even – Bet that the winning number will be odd or even. Win at roulette with this bet and the payout is 1/1.
Red / Black – Bet that the winning number will be red or black. Win at roulette with this bet and the payout is 1/1.
Dozens – Bet that the winning number will belong to one of the three “dozens” depicted on the table layout. Win at roulette with this bet and the payout is 2/1.
Six Numbers – Bet that the winning number will be one of six adjoining numbers on the layout. Win at roulette with this bet and the payout is 5/1.
Four Numbers – Bet that the winning numbers will be one of four adjoining numbers on the layout. Win at roulette with this bet and the payout is 8/1.
Three Numbers – Bet that the winning numbers will be one of three adjoining numbers on the layout. Win at roulette with this bet and the payout is 11/1.
Two Numbers – Bet that the winning numbers will be one of two adjoining numbers on the layout. Win at roulette with this bet and the payout is 17/1.
One Number – Bet that the winning number will be the one you predict. Win at roulette with this bet and the payout is 35/1.
Unless you specifically bet on a green zero, any bet you have on the table when zero comes up will lose. This is where the house derives it’s edge in the game. American Roulette wheels have two zeros (0 and 00) and so that game has a larger house edge than European Roulette, where wheels have a single zero (0). It is therefore easier to win at roulette when playing the European game
There are a number of roulette variations online that you won’t find in offline casinos. Some of these offer bonuses for roulette winning streaks, bonuses for hitting certain sections of the wheel, and progressive jackpots. These bonuses can mean that you make more profit when you win at roulette.
In all games of online roulette, bets are placed by positioning chips on the layout according to the type of bet you want to make. For example, placing a £1 chip on the number 17 puts a bet on the single number 17 for the next spin.
