Online Casino Safety

Online Casino SafetyThe topic of online casino safety is one that is cropping up all over the world as governments, regulators and casinos alike discuss the legalities of casino gambling. The approach of some nations to problem gambling has been to implement a blanket ban on all forms of online gambling, but the weakness of that approach is that it doesn’t actually stop online casino gambling from taking place – all it does is drive the activity underground, and possibly into the hands of illegal casinos seeking to exploit the desire to gamble regardless of the law.

Such ‘underground casinos’ are fortunately relatively low in number, but there are enough of them to make client safety an important issue. Reputable casino operators argue that the only way to make online casino gambling entirely safe for bettors is to remove existing blanket bans so that licensed casinos can be established and regulated. With legal online casinos to visit, the demand for underground casinos would soon plummet, making things a whole lot safer for clients.

Licensed casino operators point out that they not only help to reduce the number of illegal establishments found online, but that they also have systems in place to help players avoid getting into gambling difficulties. Whilst the majority of online casino gamblers have no trouble at all keeping their gambling under control, a minority lack the self-control required to play safely, and reputable casinos have become very good at recognising players with potential problems and offering various exclusion protocols that are designed to help such people. Illegal casinos, on the other hand, have no such care about the welfare of players.

The idea of banning any activity in some regions but not in others has never worked. Most human beings value their sense of independence to the point where, if they want to participate in an activity that is illegal in certain areas, will simply seek out opportunities to participate in that activity elsewhere, or outside the legal system.

If anything, it could be said that making an activity illegal in one place but not in another only makes that activity seem more appealing because of its illegal status. We tend to want what we are forbidden from having, and that desire plays straight into the hands of underground organisations that are willing to cash in on the situation.

In the UK and other countries where online gambling is perfectly legal and very tightly regulated, underground organisations are virtually non-existent and players can enjoy their games with a high degree safety and security. Hopefully non-gambling nations will bear this fact in mind when revising their own legislation so that online casino safety can soon become a global condition and not one that is restricted to a fortunate few.
