Jackpots Irrelevant for Most Online Casino Gamblers
Most online gamblers are very realistic about their chances of winning a life-changing jackpot, according to a new survey of online gamblers carried out by Gamble.co.uk. Whilst online casino jackpots do of course play a part in encouraging players to try out new games, most players don’t play those games for the sole purpose of winning jackpots, but are instead quite happy to play for the sheer entertainment of the experience. If modest profits are gained in the process, so much the better, but winning is by no means viewed as essential.
94% of players who participated in the survey estimated that their chances of winning an online casino jackpot of six figures or higher in the next six months was “Unlikely but not impossible”. Less than 1% of players combined believed that winning a huge jackpot was either “Impossible” or “Certain”, with just over 5% of respondents saying that the outcome was “Likely but not certain”.
When asked whether they played online casino games primarily to have fun or make money, the majority of survey participants (97%) chose “To have fun” as their response, with only 3% choosing “To make money”. Of course, these results reflect the fact that survey participants had to choose one response or the other, and in many cases players will want to have fun and make money, but having fun certainly seems to be the more important aspect of the two.
The survey excluded online poker players for the simple reason that poker is largely a game of skill, and it would not therefore be unreasonable for the skilful player to expect to win poker games on a consistent basis. Games of chance such as online slots and roulette, on the other hand, are totally reliant on luck, and there is nothing that a player can do to influence their odds of winning any prize.
The findings of this survey are positive, because they indicate that jackpots are largely irrelevant for most online gamblers and that the important thing is to have fun from the gambling experience itself. If a jackpot win comes along in the process, so much the better, but the majority of online casino players aren’t counting on that happening.
As one respondent said, “I look at my casino gaming as a pleasurable hobby. I don’t spend any more on my gaming than some people spend on their golf or nights out at the pub, and I enjoy playing for the sake of playing. If I ever managed to win a jackpot then I’d be ecstatic, but that’s not my main motivation for playing, not at all.”
