Right and wrong are terms used in craps to describe bettors. But what is the difference between a right and a wrong bettor, and does being a right or wrong bettor affect your chances of winning?
These might sound like silly questions to someone who has been playing craps for years, but no question is a silly question when it comes to obtaining knowledge before you put your hard-earned money at risk in a casino. A far sillier thing would be to dive straight into a game like craps without knowing how to play and losing a small fortune as a result.
The short answer to the question we opened with is that a right bettor is one who places Pass line and Come bets, whereas a wrong bettor is one who places Don’t Pass and Don’t Come bets.
The term right and wrong refers to whether or not the player is siding with the shooter. If he is, as would be the case with a Pass line or Come bet, then he is a right bettor. However, if he is opposing the shooter with a Don’t Pass or Don’t Come bet, he is said to be a wrong bettor.
There is really only a fractional difference in the house edge for the Pass line and Don’t Pass bet. The Pass line has an edge of 1.41% and the Don’t pass has an edge of 1.40%. Similarly, the edge for the Come bet is 1.41% and 1.40% for the Don’t Come bet. Strictly speaking, right bettors have a miniscule advantage over their wrong cousins, but not one worth bragging about.
Overall, both right and wrong bettors are placing some of the best bets in the casino, so you can choose to join either group without worry. That said, many players prefer to place right bets and side with the shooter so that they can cheer him on.
