Microgaming is one of the most famous online gaming software companies in the world, and for that reason you are likely to come across the Microgaming name again and again. Microgaming created the first online casino software in 1994 and has continued pushing the boundaries as far as technology has allowed ever since.

Consider Microgaming’s launch of Cash Splash in 1998. Today we take progressive slots games for granted, but it was Microgaming that made the concept take off when they introduced the downloadable Cash Splash game on an unsuspecting and ultimately delighted public.

In 2000, Microgaming enabled players to enjoy online casinos without having to download any software. It wasn’t that Microgaming had anything against downloading games (on the contrary, the company continues to create such games even today) but that it saw potential for games that could be played in the web browser using Flash technology.

The company launched four Flash games in 2000 (as well as a couple more downloadable games) and then, in 2001, it released a Flash version of Cash Splash and made Microgaming progressive jackpots available to instant casino players as it had to download players just a few years earlier.

All of this innovation earned Microgaming a number of accolades, but the company hit the headlines in a particularly big way in 2002 when its Major Millions game paid out a jackpot of $1.5 million, setting a new world record for the biggest ever online slots win. This was just six years after the first Microgaming software creation, but already the company had a very healthy stable of 100 games – and now a world record to go with it!

2003 saw Microgaming branch off into the world of online poker as well as general casino games, and by the end of 2004 the 100 games we mentioned a moment ago had grown to around 250.

Microgaming hasn’t show any signs of slowing down over the last few years. Quite the opposite, in fact. In 2005 Microgaming launched Tomb Raider slots and the branded games have kept on coming. 2007 gave us Hitman slots, and 2008 gave us Tomb Raider 2 as well as the innovative MySlots game.

In 2009, Microgaming reached a couple more milestones. First, it released its 400th game, The Great Galaxy Grab. Then, in May 2009 Microgaming set a brand new world record for the biggest online casino payout when a player in Greece won €6.3 million playing the Mega Moolah progressive.

Clearly, Microgaming is a force to be reckoned with, and the online gaming scene just wouldn’t be the same without this incredibly innovative company.
