Progressive Blackjack
Progressive blackjack is a blackjack game which offers a progressive jackpot. The jackpot fund begins at a set level and then grows from game to game until someone gets a hand that qualifies for the progressive payout.
At this stage the jackpot – which can be as high as six or even seven figures – is paid out and reset at the starting level. To stand a chance of winning the progressive jackpot, players usually have to place a side bet in addition to the normal blackjack bet.
The hand that qualifies for the jackpot varies from game to game. In some games, the jackpot is awarded to hand consisting of three cards, all of which are the 7 of diamonds, and this game is generally know as Triple 7’s. In other games the jackpot is awarded if the first four cards dealt to the player are all red or black aces. Because the rules can differ so much, it is essential that you familiarise yourself with them before sitting down to play any progressive blackjack game.
Some casinos offer consolation prizes for players who come close to winning the jackpot outright, but not quite close enough. For example, in games where the jackpot is won by players who get four aces as their first four cards, consolation prizes may be paid to those who get three suited aces as their first three cards, or two suited aces as their first two cards. The consolation amounts paid in these situations will obviously not be as much as the jackpot itself, but they are far better than nothing.
As to whether progressive blackjack is a game worth playing in the first place, that really depends on your own attitude to the game. If you are a strategic player who is serious about making money, the additional side bet on the progressive jackpot is not worth making. However, if you are playing just to have a good time and you don’t mind risking a relatively small amount to stand an extremely small chance of winning a large jackpot, the side bet may well appeal to you.
