Hand signals in blackjack are the physical gestures that players make to indicate to the dealer what they want to do with their hands; for example whether they want to hit or stand.
Some players don’t see the point of using hand signals. After all, the dealer isn’t deaf, so why can’t players simply call “hit” or “stand” as appropriate?
The answer to this common question is that hand signals are used in blackjack to eliminate any confusion between the player and the dealer. In most casinos, the surveillance cameras that are positioned in the in the ceiling (the so-called “eyes in the sky”) do not pick up any verbal dialogue. Instead, casino security personnel monitor the hand signals so that they can fully comprehend the action at the blackjack game.
It can therefore be said that hand signal protect the casino, the players and the dealers from any attempt at cheating, as all of the game actions can be played back and understood despite the lack of any soundtrack.
