A Winning Mindset for Blackjack Players

A Winning Mindset for Blackjack PlayersMost people are familiar with the concept that a person can improve their chances of success in life by adopting a more effective way of thinking, but this ‘attitude factor’ is just as important in Blackjack games. Put simply, if a player has a losing mindset then he is far more likely to lose money at the tables than a player who has a winning mindset. That being the case, what exactly do we mean by the term ‘winning mindset’ and – just as importantly – how does a player go about getting one?

A winning mindset can best be defined as a state of mind in which the player is emotionally calm, thinking rationally, willing to follow a predetermined plan and has the self-discipline that is required to adhere to his plan. Let’s discuss each of these traits in turn so that you can work on developing them in an effort to fare better at the Blackjack tables…

Be Calm
It is easy to allow our emotions to get out of control when we play Blackjack, and if we aren’t careful we could be feeling ‘up’ one minute and ‘down’ the next depending on how the cards run. There is nothing wrong with a bit of excitement of course, but if our emotions get too involved it can skew our ability to make sound decisions, and that in turn can make it more difficult to play strategically. The first step to developing a winning mindset is therefore to try and get into the habit of being as emotionally calm as you can when playing at the tables. Appreciate the wins and frown at the losses, by all means, but don’t allow your emotions to derail your strategic approach.

Think Rationally
Whilst it is perfectly possible to make a profit at the Blackjack tables by relying on luck alone, your best chances of success come when you approach the game in a more rational manner. Our second tip is therefore to think rationally about the game and adopt a more sensible strategy than just throwing caution to the wind – for example, by splitting a £100 session bank into 20 x £5 bets rather than slamming the whole lot on a single hand and hoping for the best.

Follow a Predetermined Plan
This third trait is one which really can help you to reduce the house edge to an absolute minimum and it is closely tied to the previous trait of thinking rationally. The good news for anyone who wants to follow a predetermined plan is that the game of Blackjack has been around for a long time and there has been plenty of work done on identifying the most profitable approach for players to take to the game. Our advice here is to make Basic Strategy your core plan and have a reliable Blackjack Chart on hand to help you take the best possible action at any given moment.

Be Disciplined
All three of the traits detailed previously will be useless unless you also develop the ability to be self-disciplined. This is something that gets easier with practice, so focus on exercising self-discipline one Blackjack session at a time by promising yourself that you will be calm, think rationally and follow your predetermined plan for the duration of your next session at the tables. The more you do this, the stronger your self-discipline gets, and more effective you will be as a Blackjack player.

By developing the four traits detailed here you will automatically develop a winning mindset which will help you to improve your game. Of course, mindset alone does not guarantee a profitable session (you still need your fair share of luck with the cards dealt) but your chances of making money will be much better with a winning mindset than they would otherwise. Enjoy your Blackjack and good luck!
