Baccarat has a long and noble history, and we use the word noble quite deliberately. A rudimentary version of baccarat was played using a deck of Tarot cards in the middle ages, and the game was though to have originated in Italy before being introduced to France at the end of the 15th century.
The name baccarat itself is derived from the Italian word baccara, meaning zero, and refers to the value given to all the face cards and tens.
The nobility of France were huge fans of the game, and it was in France that it evolved into chemin de fer, the game we are most familiar with today.
Baccarat is still possibly the most prestigious game around, and is enjoyed by celebrities, royalty and even fictional characters in best-selling novels (James Bond was a keen baccarat player in Casino Royale). In some rather exclusive casinos the baccarat tables are physically cordoned off to separate the players from the rest of the customers in the casino. Fortunately, online casino players can sit at any baccarat table they please, be they members of the nobility or not.
