Aspinalls Club, London
Aspinalls is one of the best known gaming establishments in London, established by the aristocratic zookeeper John Aspinall (also known as Aspers to his friends). The first Aspinalls Casino was originally set up in the 1960s and was home to a varied and gentrified clientele for many years. However, Aspinall sold his original Mayfair casino (which now houses the Clermont Club) and set up the current Aspinalls in its present location in 1992, which is today managed by his son, Damien.
Aspinalls is still managed by many of the original staff who worked at the Clermont Club in the 1960s, and has maintained its exclusive clientele. Membership is strictly by application and has a £1,000 joining fee. However, for those that can afford to join, a luxurious gaming haven awaits. The London townhouses which house the casino and the fine dining room were designed by world famous interior designer Tessa Kennedy, and feature opulent furnishings, objets d’art collected by John Aspinall himself and stunning paintings.
Although the casino is members only, you do not have to be a member to enjoy the dining experience on offer at Aspinalls. Booking, however, is essential. There is also a private outdoor dining area for the summer months named The Terrace, making a stunning hidden retreat from the city. World renowned chef Alberico Penati is responsible for the menu, which features a range of cuisines and can also be tailored to the individual.
The casino itself, situated on the first floor, features nine tables with a choice of Blackjack, Roulette, Punto Banco or Poker. There is also a room for Soft Gaming, where members can play billiards or cards in a more relaxed environment. Aspinalls also has three private gaming rooms for the more discreet player or private parties.
The exclusive Mayfair address of the Casino means parking is nearly impossible, but this is no problem as the casino has a chauffeured car service to collect guests from hotels, airports or residences in the Greater London area. In fact, nothing at Aspinalls is too much trouble for their treasured guests. If the English, Lebanese, Chinese or Indian dishes on the menu do not suit, the chef will whip up whatever you desire. If you wish to gamble with higher stakes in a more secluded setting, a salon privee will be opened for you. Finally, should a guest require accommodation, the casino will gladly arrange a suitable suite at the nearby Four Seasons, Dorchester or Hilton hotels.
