Victor Chandler has been rapped on the knuckles by the Advertising Standards Authority for an advertisement which allegedly made the implicit suggestion that having more money might help men improve their sex lives. The advertisement in question took the form of a poster featuring a woman pouting and the tag line: “You love sex. She loves sex. You love money. She loves money. You have money. She loves you. See how much you have in common?”

The majority of us in the real world who actually saw this advertisement probably smiled and went on. But someone complained that it was irresponsible because it “linked gambling with financial and sexual success.”

Victor Chandler defended themselves against this accusation by explaining that the advert was based on their “everyone loves a winner” campaign and was designed simply to get the attention of passers by. They also pointed out the fact that the poster was only displayed in male toilets in licensed premises, which meant that it could only be seen by the target audience – namely males aged 18 or older. The poster’s call to action invited the viewer to text a number to try and get free entry into a poker tournament. It did not therefore directly encourage the viewer to gamble.

The Advertising Standards Authority upheld the complaint because the poster in question included the web site address for the Victor Chandler poker room several times, so in their opinion the defence that the ad did not directly encourage the viewer to gamble was inaccurate. They also said that: “the text ‘See how much you have in common?’ reinforced the implication that men, even if socially inept, could obtain sexual success because they had money and that the more money they had, the greater the likelihood of sexual success.”

Now we don’t know about you, but we could list a dozen socially inept men who obtained sexual success thanks to being well-endowed in the wallet department. Does this mean that Victor Chandler has been rapped by the ASA because they told the truth? Whatever your point of view, it has to be said that a lot more people will now hear about Victor Chandler’s “money and sex” link following the ASA’s intervention than ever would have been the case had the poster campaign been left to run its natural course.
